Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that involves using a dermaroller (a skin needling device between 0.13 and 3mm in length) to create “microchannels” in the skin. In doing so, the process allows growth factors or serum boosters to permeate into the skin tissue. Microneedling is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve the appearance of facial acne scars, facial wrinkles, and abdominal scars in patients aged 22 years or older.

We often use microneedling in conjunction with PRP therapy for anti-aging. Depending on the patient’s needs, the procedure can also be used to infuse serum boosters (i.e., vitamin C, hyaluronic acid) into the skin. This treatment is good for all skin types and can be performed year-round. There is minimal downtime, which may include redness and peeling. Results are seen best in 4-6 treatments that we space 4 weeks apart.

While microneedling is already included in our anti-aging PRP facials, the treatment still provides several benefits even if performed without PRP. The microchannels create small, unseen “wounds” to the skin that force re-growth of collagen, and tighten and smoothen the skin. This works wonders for patients that have suffered with acne scarring or from aged scars such as a C-section scar.

Healing from microneedling usually doesn’t take too long, with some patients healing in just a day. Other patients may need up to two to three days to heal completely from the treatment.

While there is some level of discomfort during the procedure, patients shouldn’t expect it to be overly painful, with pain closer to mild irritation and leading to skin redness afterwards.
